Improved and Mtolep 1 he legislature of each State should pass a law for the establish ment and maintenace of good roads. Let the people of town or city unite with the farmer in agitating the matter; an1 a nnneninni nr . .aen-L k A The twentieth Annual State Con vention of the Young Men's Christ ian A sanitations of North Carolina will e bold March 19th to 2 2d at Charlotte. An interesting program is beinsr prepared. Some speakers have already agreed to be present. Every Assiiciation in the state should be represented by as many delegates a possible. Logan Harris, Raleigh, protuia' publicans bavf written VA airman Holton, of the Republican- Executive committee, requesting him to call a meeting at an early day. It fei -jener ally understood that ten of the fifteen members of tne Republican Elxec live Committee are Russell men. The Wilmington Star says two are for Jim Boyd, o.ie for Oliver Dockery and two are noncommittal . Of the six colored members, five are for Russell and one doesn't know who he is for. Senator Mills.of Texas, has been "jollying" the republicans nnspar iniily about that House tariff bill, now in the Senate. He offers his congratulations to the republicans of the House for havine, after many years abuse of the democratic idea of a tariff for revenue only, paaaed the only strictly revenue tariff, bill tnat ever went through either branch ot Congress. The republicans try to escape the charge of inconsistency by claiming the bill to be an "emer gency" measure, but the claim does not work. The Republicans of NorrtMlarolina are doing a good deal ,, of kicking against Russell and jiijngresaman Settle, the statement being made that it is against what luti kickers term "their "self evident bossism," writes Col. Olds to the R'cbroond Disp-ttch. It it now quite well known that Re publican Chairman A. E. Holton is an aspirant for the nomination . of governor. One remarkable thing is that while some populists say there la to be cooperation between their party and the Republican, none of them will say that a Republican is to v.et the gubernatorial nomination. The whip of the Quay .Piatt Reed combine seems to be just as effective among the republicans of the Senate as it was in the House, tnit it had to be heavily laid upon some of the re publican Senators before they would agree to support the ta'iff bill arrang ed by Mr. Reed and passed by his House, without amendment. They swore through two long caucusses that some McKinley amendments should be attached to the bill or they would not support it, but at tha third cau cus Boss Quay's weilding of the com bine whip was more than they could stand and thev agreed to support the bill without amendment, thus Morini? another decisive victory for victoryTor the Quay -Piatt Reed com Line ' Hut this does not make it curtain that Mr; Reed's tar ff bill will pass the Senate. Some : votes will I have to be gotten either from the .1 :-... ,.. . democrats or the populists to pass it, aini if passed President ; Cleveland Judoe Russell is heing bitterly op posed for the Republican nomination for Governor by prominent colored riin tlioughout tle State. Mr. Ru sell, two years ago, . wrote a ver' caustic letter about the negro , in whiclr he said, in "ubstance, that the' were savages. I nis raised tueir ire and il has eea known that when he popped up bis head a a candidate they would hit at him. Whether ther can hit iitmhard enotmh to defeat Ms nomination ia the Question.' for if Miev do not get in their wrrk i before the coBtion tliey will left, for once noniiuatfd evci v. man of.Wthini will eat crnvr. Al tins talk fa ho til the colored vote be iti? a holtt-r ia trash he votes straight every lame. What will the Republican papers now L). whn'h have 'yo . p' rsistentl v abused Cleveland for issuing bonds? The new Republican "relief MdV j and a horizontal advance in taxation of 15 per cent. That is the "relief bill' in a nutshell. .This hilt paad the Republican Mouse under one of Czar Reed's tag laws cutting off debate. The Republicans thus go further than Cleveland ever dared to. TiR'V raise taxation on top of "gold bonds." The Democrats voed solid lv against the hill, as did some of the Populists. And yet the Ri'pulican hirelings and their sheets do nothing in this country but denounce "io!d bug Clevelandim" "hard tiroes," and praise up "fusion" and Republic camtn.
